OK, let’s get down to some Excel business. This post will focus on my absolute favorite Excel shortcut. You'd think that for someone like me who uses Excel extensively day in and day out it'd be something extravagant; NOPE! My favorite Excel function is simply "Ctrl-z"; the "undo" function! If I had a nickel for every time this nifty little function has saved my behind, I'd be a rich man!
Sure you can easily grab your mouse and click on the "Undo Arrow" or even click on Edit / Undo but who has time for that? Your hands are most likely already on the keyboard; all you have to do is shift them over. The time it takes to reach up, grab the mouse, find the arrow on the screen, place it on the undo arrow, click it, and bring your hand back down to the keyboard will be on average 2 - 3 seconds for most people. If you multiply those 2 -3 seconds by the number of times you do it in a particular day/week/month etc, it really adds up, especially if you use it as many times as I do!!! In fact, I’ve become so accustomed to using the undo function that I literally find myself wishing there were an undo function for everything else in life!!!
"Ctrl-z" is not exclusive to Excel; it's used in many programs. Many of Microsoft's programs incorporate this function along with other programs like Photoshop and this blog as well.
Occasionally, after I undo something, I find that I probably should not have. Well, Excel has an answer for that as well. In Excel, "Ctrl-y" acts as a Re-Do function. Again, there are other ways of accomplishing this in Excel, but your hands are probably already on the keyboard so it simply saves time.
So the next time you’re working on something in Excel, and you need to undo it, try using the “Ctrl-z” function. I tell you it saves time!
